MKE Brewing: Hop Freak

15 Jun

Man I just can’t get over how many amazing beers you can get in this state! MKE Brewing Co. has created another wonderful specimen with Hop Freak, a rishi tea double I.P.A. I tried this one out while at Houdini’s Escape Gastropub in Appleton, and just had to grab some for a review cuz it was so delish. Continue reading

Well, today it’s time for another beer that I’ve never tried before. In fact the only Oskar Blues beer I’ve had is Dale’s Pale Ale.┬áThat is a pretty dang good beer, so we’ll see how this IPA measures up. Continue reading

Man, just seeing this beer makes me happy. It makes me think of the song by The Hives. If you haven’t heard it, go look it up. Anyway, Brutus is an American Strong Ale, one of my favorite styles, pretty excited for this one. Continue reading

Weekend at Louie’s

Well, as much as I don’t care for sweet things, I have been known to enjoy some fruitier beers, as long as they are tastefully done. Today I’m checking out MKE Brewing’s Weekend at Louie’s, a blueberry amber ale. Continue reading

Idiot Farm, an Imperial IPA

7 Jan

Idiot Farm. First off, it’s a great name for an IPA. I don’t why, it just is. I first heard of Karben 4 a couple years ago when they opened, but haven’t had an opportunity to try anything from them until they recently started wider distribution. I’m definitley a fan of their packaging. Idiot Farm is a pretty entertaining landscape for sure.

The pour of Idiot Farm is visually exciting, a beautiful hazy golden amber color. It is quite hazy for an IPA with lots of apparent sediment floating around. It looks quite different from most IPAs that I have imbibed.

The aroma hints of greatness, I must say. A malty hoppy swirl of flavors tell of deliciousness within. Normally beers like this lose the maltiness in the smell, but this one starts off with a balance and then gives way to hoppiness as it should be. Earthy pine and resin accompany a touch of pineapple. It’s almost as much fun sniffing as it is drinking.

Okay that’s a lie, it’s more fun to drink, but it is a great smell. Idiot Farm has a perfect mouthfeel for a double IPA. It’s fairly heavy, a good thickness to support the powerful flavor. It’s well carbonated, delicious bubbles all over.

The flavor is perfect. I’ve seen some mixed reviews on this one, and maybe I’m too easy on beers, but I can’t find a flaw anywhere. It seems at first that it’s going to be an overpowering death by hops, but the bitterness swirls again with malty support and it’s like a Sufjan Stevens concert in my mouth. There is a detectable note of fruit underlying the earthy wonder.

This is a great double IPA. One of the better ones I’ve hd I feel. Of course, I always suffer a bit from the “My favorite beer is the one I’m drinking right now” bias, but nonetheless, Idiot Farm is fantastic. From start to finish, it’s almost perfect. Highly recommended from the beercyclist (=

New Belgium Review: Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ale

4 Jan

Well, today on the blog after a long hiatus, I am reviewing New Belgium and Ben & Jerry’s current collaboration, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ale. I’d been searching for it for a while and sort of accidentally stumbled upon it. I was at Fox River House in Appleton (a most fine establishment) for our an annual resolution ride. You know, ringing in the new year with bikes and beer as is apropo, and there it was on tap. I was so excited I had two, and then found it at the local grocer! You either love this one, or you hate even the idea of it, so what could make for a better review? Let’s get to it! Continue reading

Arrogant Bastard Ale

Well, I’m pretty sure I did this on my other site that I lost. A wonderful part of my being pretty depressed during a lot of the last couple years was that I let all my websites go. I haven’t been able to find any of my backups. Ahh, ce la vie, right? Anyways, since Stone finally decided to distribute to Wisconsin, [AMAZING!] I had to make sure I did this one again.
