Sierra Nevada: Ruthless Rye

23 May

Tonight I bring you a review of another beer from one of my favorite breweries, Sierra Nevada. I don’t think I’ve had a beer from them that has been anything short of excellent. They just really seem to know what they’re doing, and the Ruthless Rye is no exception. This is a very unique beer with its own delicious set of skills (=

I really like the label of this beer, it has an old feel. The subtle desaturated colors lend well to the seeming seriousness of a rye IPA, and set one up for the fortitude that lurks within.

It pours a nice dark amber with a gorgeous head. The head stayed too, nice and lacy, a good amount of carbonation present. It is not quite see-through, but has a bright feel, not cloudy, with lots of bubbles rising to the top.

Right from the start, the Rye backing of this beer makes its presence known. It smells of an IPA, with floral undertones, but the peppery presence of the rye is not missed. It brings a different depth to the smell, and I found it to be intriguing.

The taste does not disappoint. It has the bitterness of a good IPA, but the malty backbone of the rye balances out the hops nicely. It has a nice hoppiness, but it is not quite as strong as some IPAs, but in no way is that a detriment. The peppery malty side of this beer that lessens the hop intensity a bit, brings a whole new dimension of flavor that my taste buds found very welcoming. As well as the nice thick mouthfeel that coated my throat with what I can only describe as a peppery smoothness. Yup, I know that’s a contradiction, but you’ll have to try it yourself to see!

This is another great beer from Sierra Nevada. As I mentioned, it’s really unique and brought a welcome change to the IPA category. I love branching out, and I think you will as well. I got mine in a pick six at festival foods, but I don’t think it will be around much more now until next winter. Even so, if you see one on the shelf, grab it! It will do just fine with a little aging (=
